Paddleboarding Essentials: What to Bring and How To Keep Your Belongings Safe

Paddleboarding Essentials: What to Bring and How To Keep Your Belongings Safe

If you're new to paddleboarding, you might be wondering what items to carry with you on your board and how to safeguard your belongings while you're out on the water. In this article, we'll cover the basics of what to bring on board and how to ensure the security of your valuables. With these tips, you can enjoy your first paddleboarding experiences with confidence and peace of mind.

Let's address the two main concerns: the necessities you'd want to take along and the valuable items you must protect. Additionally, we'll provide practical suggestions on organizing and safeguarding your belongings.

Essential Items To Bring On Board

When it comes to things you want to have on board, there are a few essentials to consider.

First, it's important to stay hydrated, so make sure to bring at least one water bottle. A vacuum-insulated water bottle is an ideal choice, as it will keep your drinking water from heating up in the sun. On most boards, you can simply slide the bottle under a cargo bungee and it will stay in place, ready for quick access when you need a water break.

It is also a good idea to bring some snacks, such as a protein bar or a bag of nuts to keep your energy levels up, or lunch if you’ll be out on the water for an extended period. An insulated lunch bag or small cooler will keep your food cool and can be stored under the bungees. Lastly, don't forget to bring some kind of footwear, in case you go on shore to explore, picnic, or find yourself in a situation where you need to walk to find help.

Valuables You Don't Want to Leave Behind

When it comes to valuables, such as your wallet, phone, keys, or non-waterproof footwear, it's important to keep them safe and dry. The best option for these is to use a waterproof bag that you take on the board with you. A roll-top dry bag or a deck bag with waterproof/water-resistant zippers are good choices. If the waterproof bag is large and you want to keep your smaller belongings organized, you can use smaller pouches or ziplock bags and put them in the larger waterproof bag.

If you are with a group and not everyone is paddling, you could also consider leaving your belongings with someone who is staying behind.

If you are renting or taking a lesson, you might also be able to leave valuables with a staff member but it is wise to check their policies on this prior as it is unlikely they will accept responsibility for any issues that may arise.

Lastly, you can leave things in your car, but this comes with the risk of a possible break-in, and you will need to have your keys with you anyway, unless your car has a keyless entry system.

Final Thoughts

Your first experiences with paddleboarding should be as fun and carefree as possible, so it’s important to plan ahead so that you have everything you need on board and know that your valuables are safe while you’re out on the water.

By bringing the essentials and securing your valuables, you enjoy a safe and fun experience, with your focus on the surroundings and the new skills you’ll be learning. While you're out on the water, don't forget to have fun and enjoy the scenery!
